So begins "Ode to Joy" by poet Friedrich von Schiller, which forms the lyrics to the final movement of Beethoven's final symphony (No 9 "Choral"), first performed in 1824 at the end of the wars of Napoleon.  Since then, this music has come to be known as one of man's greatest expressions of joy, peace and brotherhood.  
Leonard Bernstein was an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the US to receive worldwide acclaim. According to music critic Donal Henahan,
