Released in '58, recorded in NY, this album showcases the peak of the "Big Band" led by jazz trumpeter "Dizzy Gillespie." Produced by "Norman Grantz." The 13-piece front line includes "Gillespie" himself, along with young trumpeter "Lee Morgan" and saxophonists "Billy Mitchell" and "Benny Golson." The rhythm section is a powerhouse with "Wynton Kelly" on piano, "Paul West" on bass, and "Charlie Pership" on drums.
The album features tracks like "Duke Jordan / Joe-Du," the title track "Birks' Works," "Autumn Leaves," "Over The Rainbow," "If You Could See Me Now," and "Whisper Not." The dynamic horn section and the skilled piano trio create a solid foundation, resulting in an incredibly refined and cool ensemble.
The sharp playing of "Gillespie" is, of course, a highlight, but the performances of young talents "Lee Morgan" and "Benny Golson" are also outstanding. A masterpiece of .

The record has visible fine scratches. There are no skips, but there is some minor surface noise throughout. The jacket has scratches, stains, and tape repair on the top edge. While you can enjoy the dynamic sound quality, pressure, and imaging of a US original from over 60 years ago, this is not recommended for those who are very particular about record condition or collectors. Please consider purchasing only if you are okay with listening to the sound of the era, and understand this is sold as-is.
